Southwest Washington Agency on Aging and Disability (SWAAD) Hosts Caregiver Appreciation Conference 2009
Longview, Washington – September 11, 2009. The Southwest Washington Agency on Aging and Disability (SWAAD) will host the Caregiver Appreciation Conference next month. The conference, to be held at the Cowlitz County Expo and Conference Center on October 24th from 10 am to 3 pm, is an educational and networking event for unpaid caregivers. Located one hour north of Portland, OR and two hours south of Seattle, WA, the conference is expected to draw attendees from across the Pacific Northwest Region.
Conference exhibitors will provide services ranging from cooking classes to massage therapy. Not only a forum for caregiver education, the Caregiver Appreciation Conference 2009 will also create an inspiring atmosphere through which unpaid caregivers can share their caregiving journey with each other in their local community. In the US alone, 34,000,000 family members and friends provide care at home for their loved ones.
Wendy Lustbader, MSW, will address the conference as keynote speaker. Lustbader, a nationally acclaimed writer and speaker on caregiving issues, is the author of Kindness: The Dilemmas of Dependency, What’s Worth Knowing and co-author of Taking Care of Aging Family Members.
The $10 registration fee includes a continental breakfast, refreshments and lunch, as well as access to all exhibits, networking opportunities and other SWAAD services. Scholarships are available to those who qualify.
The SWAAD is the federally designated agency on aging for the five southwest Washington counties of Clark, Cowlitz, Klickitat, Skamania, and Wahkiakum. It is one of thirteen agencies on aging in Washington State and is part of the state and national network of area agencies on aging. The SWAAD promotes independence, choice, well-being, and dignity for persons aged 60 and over, adults with disabilities and their families through a comprehensive, coordinated system of home and community-based services.

The commission serves in an advisory capacity to the city manager and city council with respect to the best methods of insuring the growth, development and expansion of the municipality. The commission performs administrative functions including the holding of hearings on subdivisions, comprehensive plan and zoning amendments.
The commission will hold a public hearing on the residential zoning code update during Wednesday’s regular meeting.
The public hearing may be the last opportunity to testify on the code update, according to a city press release. Following the hearing, the commission will make a recommendation to the City Council, which may or may not hold a public hearing on the matter.
The draft code updates include creating a Traditional Neighborhood District, permitting up to a four-plex in the R-2 District, modifying some setback standards and adding standards for maximum density, building height and impervious areas of lots. The code update also allows for townhouse developments.
The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at City Hall, at the corner of 15th Avenue and Broadway.
The second of three community workshops will be held Wednesday to create a vision for Kelso’s new comprehensive plan.
The 6 p.m. workshop will be in the Kelso High School cafeteria. The final workshop will be Oct. 21. In November, the city will hold an open house to present the results of the visioning effort and find out what the public thinks of it.
Once it’s created — a process that will take a couple years — the new comprehensive plan will serve as a blueprint for the city’s growth for the next two decades. It will replace the existing comprehensive plan, which is nearly 30 years old and has not been updated since 1992.
Currently, the city lacks 20-year plans for capital facilities funding, transportation and utilities.
“Without these basic tools, how does anybody think we’re going to make progress? That’s what we’re trying to do,” Community Development Director Mike Kerins said. “People of Kelso have never had this opportunity before.”
After the council adopts the “visioning document” created during the workshops, Kerins will put together special interest groups to flesh out policies and goals for the comprehensive plan. Future zoning, codes and land-use maps will be based on the plan.
The city of Longview is holding an open house tonight to present a Lake Sacajawea park-preservation plan that’s being created to comply with state regulations for historic places.
The open house will be from 6-9 p.m. at the Cowlitz County PUD auditorium, 961 12th Ave., Longview. A second open house will be held in November.
At the open houses, the city will present the project and provide information about the park’s history and development. The city also wants to hear the community’s opinions and values about Lake Sacajawea Park.
The formal preservation plan will guide the decision-making process to help retain historic features and guide future work projects.
Questions? Call Ivona Kininmonth at the city at (360) 442-5208.
The U.S. Forest Service is asking for ideas on how best to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The agency’s anniversary planning team is holding a meeting in Kelso on Oct. 16 for all interested parties. The 30th anniversary is May 18, 2010, and officials want ideas of what they should plan and what is available.
Participants to the two-hour meeting are asked to RSVP to Mark Plotkin, Cowlitz County Tourism Bureau Director, by Oct. 14 at 360-577-3137 or mark@visitmtsthelens.com.
The meeting starts at noon at the Kelso Red Lion Hotel. Lunch is available for purchase from the hotel’s restaurant.
With One Voice is a collaborative of Kelso and Longview School Administrators along with representatives from community prevention agencies. The mission of With One Voice is to Create a culture of wellness, addressing the issues of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, abuse, and addiction through partnerships that maximize community resources without duplicating efforts.
This group formed in August 2008 by Kelso and Longview school administrators partnering with community prevention agencies to address substance abuse among the children and students in our community. The group met and discussed how “With One Voice” they could send a message throughout the community that children’s substance abuse problems need to be addressed and resources made available to those children and their families. One of the first steps of this group was to design a training conference to connect educators with community resources and give them the training needed to link students and their families with resources available in the community. This event is the Cowlitz County With One Voice Inservice Day October 9, 2009.
The Longview City Council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers on 2nd floor of Longview City Hall at 1525 Broadway, Longview. Tonight the Longview City Council will evaluate whether the city should reimburse Western Youth Baseball for repairing about $5,500 in vandalism and burglary damage to their concession building at John Null Park.
Under city policy, sports leagues are responsible for the buildings they construct and use for their programs at city parks. Historically, other leagues have paid for damage to their buildings with insurance or league money, according to city documents.
The 7 p.m. meeting is upstairs at Longview City Hall, at the corner of Broadway and 15th Avenue.
