Medicine Wheel Teachings
Held every 1st Saturday of the Month from 1-4pmFirst Class Starts August 2, 2008
The newly forming Snake Clan Medicine Wheel teachings will be taught by Roy Wilson (Grandfather) the Spiritual Leader and Storyteller of the Cowlitz tribe and Kyle Ward who will teach how to contact the spirit helpers of the medicine wheel by journeying to them to help you in every day ordinary life to ask for guidence, learning and assistance.
Roy is also a published author and a former minister. Currently there are 38+ active Clans of Roy's teachings across the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe with a gathering of the Clans at least once a year here in the PNW. We are truly honored that he has agreed to help us establish this new clan.
Please bring your drum and/or rattle, bottle of water, an open mind and heart to hear Roy and Kyle as they teach the medicine wheel while weaving the traditional Native American ways and beliefs with other cultures for a greater understanding of walking the

The commission serves in an advisory capacity to the city manager and city council with respect to the best methods of insuring the growth, development and expansion of the municipality. The commission performs administrative functions including the holding of hearings on subdivisions, comprehensive plan and zoning amendments.
The major responsibility of the Commission is to identify and actively encourage the conservation of the city’s historic resources by initiating and maintaining a register of historic places and reviewing proposed changes to register properties.
It also raises community awareness of the city’s history and historic resources, and serves as the city’s primary resource in matters of history, historic planning, and preservation.

The Castle Rock School Board meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Generally speaking, community input is taken at approximately 6 p.m. However, anyone wanting to speak to the School Board may actually request a specific time between 5:30 and 8 pm by simply phoning the district office (501-2940) a day or two in advance. Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also on a unique journey of providing care to a person with dementia. Recognizing that some caregivers find it challenging to access traditional support groups, the Chapter has launched a telephone support group that offers the benefits of a traditional face-to-face support group without the need to leave home. The toll-free teleconference group is held the third Tuesday of each month, from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m., and facilitated by Barbara Bridges, RN, MSN. The Kelso-Longview Chamber of Commerce is kicking off its latest effort to promote free enterprise at its annual economic summit 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Cowlitz Expo Center.
The forum will feature a keynote speaker and local experts in healthcare, education, real estate and politics.
The chamber recently announced its participation in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s campaign “American Free Enterprise. Dream Big.”
The partnership allows the local chamber to take advantage of the national chamber’s marketing capabilities to promote business and bring jobs to the area, said Rick Winsman, president of the Kelso-Longview Chamber.
“Small business and the free enterprise system are what provide about 75 percent of the new jobs,” Winsman said.

Come join a volunteer work party on Saturday or Sunday to continue construction of the new Hardy Ridge Trail. This weekends work party features an optional campout and potluck at the park's group site. No prior experience with trail work necessary. WTA volunteers provide tools and instruction.
Each work party begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 3:30 pm back at the trailhead with pop and cookies. During the work project we'll be constructing the trail using digging tools and removing stumps. Building a new trail is a great experience and a fun way to meet new people while giving back to trails.

The 27th annual Jumbo's Toy Run takes place Nov. 29, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and includes a biker parade through Longview and a party afterward at the Longview Moose Lodge. Toys are strapped onto bikes and bikers during the event. The charitable event is named for its founder, former R.A. Long teacher and Harley rider Jim “Jumbo” DeMakos, who drowned in 1984 during a canoe trip on the Cowlitz River. The motorcycle run starts at 1 p.m. Participants will meet at noon in the Twin City Glass parking lot, 916 Vandercook Way. They will then parade down Commerce Avenue, past the Bud Clary Chevrolet dealership, circle back on 12th Avenue and end up at the Longview Moose Lodge. Admission to the party at the Moose Lodge is a $10 donation or an unwrapped toy of equal value. Organizers get names of needy families from area schools and hold a party in December where toys and gifts are distributed. Usually about 800 children benefit from the event, though Peppers said with the recession the numbers are likely to increase. Toy donations also can be dropped off at The Sub Shop on 15th Avenue in Longview.

The Longview City Council will discuss raising next year’s utility rates at Tuesday night’s workshop.
City staff members are proposing a rate increases of about 15 percent for water, 9 percent for sewer, 7 percent for stormwater and 2.5 percent for solid waste. Raising rates hikes would increase the average residential customer’s monthly water bill in 2010 from $26.98 to $31. The sewer bill would rise from $46.65 a month to $50.85 a month.
A utility rate workshop that was scheduled last month was postponed.
Since 2007, the City Council has bumped up water rates by 29 percent and sewer rates by 17 percent, not including increases proposed for 2010.
The city is in the midst of a multi-year utility rate hike to raise millions of dollars needed to plan, design and build alternatives to the city’s aging water and sewer treatment systems. Also, Longview must shoulder a portion of the $34 million federally mandated upgrades to the Three Rivers Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, which serves Longview, Kelso, Beacon Hill Sewer District and parts of Cowlitz County.

The Castle Rock School Board meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Generally speaking, community input is taken at approximately 6 p.m. However, anyone wanting to speak to the School Board may actually request a specific time between 5:30 and 8 pm by simply phoning the district office (501-2940) a day or two in advance. The board generally meets in room 217 of the middle school, 615 Front Avenue South.
